Frequently asked questions
Here are some answers to the type of questions I regularly get asked. Do call or email if your question isn’t listed here and I’ll be happy to help.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a completely natural state of altered awareness that you already experience a number of times a day. Anytime you daydream, your mind wanders off to another place or time, or when you are truly focused, such as reading a book, driving a car or watching TV. In this state the subconscious part of your mind is receptive to positive ideas and suggestions and, like a vast databank, access to past events and emotions can be elicited in order to heal and change the way you perceive yourself and others.
What can I expect when I visit a hypnotherapist?
As with any health professional, a hypnotherapist will begin by getting some background information. Then they will discuss with you what it is you want to achieve, and whether your goal is achievable and realistic. The therapist will discuss any concerns or questions you may have, and explain hypnosis to you and what you can expect to experience during the session.
The hypnotherapist will then guide you into the pleasant, relaxed state of hypnosis, and use any one of a range of hypnotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic techniques to help you let go of old and ineffective behaviour and responses, become more resourceful, and to become the person you want to be.
How does it feel to be hypnotized?
Everyone is different. Some say that their body feels like a lead weight, others say they feel as though they’re floating. Most people will agree that it’s a lovely feeling because they are more relaxed than they have ever been before.
Can I be made to do anything under hypnosis?
Actually no, the power is NOT in the hypnotist, it is in the client – the person who is guided into hypnosis. All hypnosis is really self hypnosis and my role is to facilitate your own inbuilt ability to change as desired. I can’t make you cluck like a chicken unless you agree to do so – neither will you disclose any information or secrets that you wouldn’t say whilst not in hypnosis.
In fact changes can only be made when you’re ready, you can’t bring someone to be ‘cured’ of smoking for instance unless they truly want it for themselves. Even if you desire change you can still resist – therefore it’s important to choose a therapist you feel comfortable with.
I went to a hypnotherapist once before and it didn’t work. Does this mean I’m not able to be hypnotized?
The most common reason for failure to induce trance is lack of rapport. To overcome this problem, meet the therapist first and choose one that you instinctively trust.
Do I have to remember things from my past in order to recover from my problem?
Not necessarily: different therapists have different approaches but if the cause of your problem is a repressed memory (one that you are unable to remember consciously), then bringing it back into conscious awareness can help you to view the problem from a different perspective and so feel differently about it.
Will there be any body contact?
There are some techniques that do require contact – for instance the EFT is a tapping technique on the head and upper body area. I will never touch you without first gaining your permission or explaining in advance what I’m doing and where I may need to touch.
Will I remember everything afterwards?
That depends on how deep in hypnosis you are, but generally most people do remember either everything or certain parts of the experience. You will find that suggestions which have been given to you in hypnosis will resurface in your conscious, thinking mind after your hypnosis and these will be the thoughts that produce changes in your behaviour or way of thinking and feeling.
Are there any side effects from hypnosis?
The side effects are the beneficial ones of feeling more relaxed afterwards and feeling more positive about whatever it was you sought hypnotherapy for. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state.
How do I know I will wake up from hypnosis?
No-one has ever remained in hypnosis indefinitely. Even if something was to happen to me halfway through the session, you would still come out of the trance state once rapport had been broken. You are still aware of everything going on.
Can hypnotherapy be helpful for children?
Yes, very helpful. Children have wonderful imaginations, which can be extremely helpful when making changes with hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy can assist children with many problems, including bed wetting, confidence and self-esteem, motivation, sport, nail biting, eating, reading, study, memory, exams, relaxation, anger, and coping with bullying, etc.
How many sessions will I need?
You are unique and so will your treatment plan be. A clearer idea will be given during your FREE initial advisory appointment; the exception to this is Quit Smoking which – after an initial meet – can be completed in one session. In order to maximise your sessions and get the results you want as quickly as possible, personalised CD’s may be included, self help techniques are taught and tasks can be undertaken by you between sessions. This, coupled with full email support, ensures you head4change as quickly as possible.
